SCAMPER Activity

How can we change or modify the "thing" to make something new?

Popsicle Bridge Activity

Why are bridges important?  How can we make a bridge using only popsicle sticks and 2 blocks?

Nuclear Meltdown

Situation:

There has been a tractor trailer accident on a highway bridge over the Connecticut River. Glass spheres containing potentially dangerous materials must be removed from the contaminated area. You work for an environmental clean up company that wants to improve its response to these nuclear waste spills.

Goal:

Using only the materials provided, bring as many marbles as possible from the top of the table into a small bag within a one minute period.

Take Apart Activity

For this activity, students were given a tinker toy to take apart using a small screw set.  Before they had opened their toy, students were asked to observe their toy and write down anything that they noticed.  What did they think made their toy work?  What did they think would be inside?  Once they broke apart their toys they had the task of putting it all back together.  Could they do it?

The luck of the Irish was with you, and you found the pot of gold at the end of the rainbow!  However, the only way to avoid leprechauns is to cross the river.  The problem is, there is no bridge, and the only thing you have with you is your giant pot full of gold coins.  Build a bridge using only pennies.  It must be at least 3 cm high and 3 cm long!
